Overview   Living

This vibrant part of London gets its name from a pub, originally built in the mid-19th century as The Swiss Tavern, a name coined to celebrate Britain’s new found passion for the Alps and everything Swiss.   As a coaching inn it not only served beer to travellers coming in and out of London but also housed a dairy selling milk and cheese!

This historic hostelry - renamed Ye Olde Swiss Cottage – survives up to the present time, but these days the chalet-style building provides a marked contrast with the thriving urban hub that has grown up around it.  Swiss Cottage is a relatively small area, squeezed between Belsize Park, Hampstead and St John’s Wood, but one that nevertheless buzzes with energy and life.

The area offers a leisure centre with a gym and swimming pool, a library, a cinema and shopping centre, not to mention a famous theatre venue (the acclaimed Hampstead Theatre).  There’s further retail therapy to be enjoyed in the parade of local shops that line the Finchley Road, and you’ll find a number of cafes and restaurants here as well.

For lovers of green, open spaces access to Regents’ Park is just two miles away. Cricket fans will relish the area’s proximity to Lords Cricket Ground in neighbouring St John’s Wood.
